Medical college

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Medical school, or medical college, is an educational institution that offers education in the field of medicine and surgery training physicians, and surgeons.

Harvard Medical School, USA

Types of medical schools

There are two types of medical school systems in the United States based on the degree they provide - Medical Doctor (M.D.) and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.).

Stanford School of Medicine

Duration of medical education

The duration of medical school varies from country to country. Some countries do not require a bachelor's degree for admission in to the medical school such as India. In that case, the duration of medication education tends to be a bit longer at about 4.5 hours in addition to one or more years of internship. In the United States, both MD and DO programs are for 4 years, in addition to a bachelor’s degree. Both also allow physicians and surgeons to use the same treatment methods.

Preclinical and clinical years

Medical education may be divided into two phases - preclinical and clinical

  1. Preclinical phase - medical school typically begins with preclinical education. This phase focuses on science, physiology, disease processes, and treatment with a combination of classroom instruction and experiential learning. Preclinical students often work with a practicing physician who mentors them in applying their knowledge of patient care.
  2. Clinical phase - Following the preclinical phase, advanced medical education finds students engaging in clerkships at hospitals or clinics affiliated with the school. Clerkships involve participating on a healthcare team and assuming a number of responsibilities that increase over time. Students may do a variety of rotations—including, for example, internal medicine, surgery, and anesthesiology—to get a feel for which specialties interest them.

Licensing and qualifying examinations

In the United States, third- and fourth-year students begin the process of taking a three-part series of licensing exams required for physicians and surgeons to practice medicine. Students usually must pass the first two parts of these tests before graduating from medical school.
