Megestrol is a progestin type of hormone that is primarily used in the treatment of breast cancer and endometrial cancer. It is also used to stimulate appetite in people with severe appetite loss.

Megestrol was first synthesized in 1959 and was approved for medical use in the United States in 1971. It is available as a generic medication.
