Merck Group

The Merck Group, branded and commonly known as Merck, is a global science and technology company that specializes in the healthcare, life sciences, and performance materials sectors. Founded in 1668 by Friedrich Jacob Merck in Darmstadt, Germany, it is the world's oldest operating chemical and pharmaceutical company. The Merck family still owns a significant, albeit minority, share of the company, maintaining its roots and headquarters in Darmstadt to this day.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of the Merck Group trace back to the 17th century, with the establishment of a pharmacy by Friedrich Jacob Merck. Over centuries, the company evolved from a pharmacy into a fully-fledged chemical and pharmaceutical company. Significant milestones in its history include the commercial production of morphine in the 19th century and the development of liquid crystals, which would later be used in LCD screens, in the 20th century.

Business Sectors[edit | edit source]

The Merck Group operates through three main business sectors: Healthcare, Life Sciences, and Performance Materials.

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

The Healthcare sector focuses on the discovery, development, and commercialization of prescription medicines and biopharmaceutical therapies, particularly in areas such as oncology, neurology, and immunology.

Life Sciences[edit | edit source]

The Life Sciences sector provides tools, services, and solutions that enable scientific research and biotechnological production. This includes laboratory supplies, technologies for drug discovery, and process solutions for drug manufacturing.

Performance Materials[edit | edit source]

This sector specializes in high-tech chemicals and materials for demanding applications, including liquid crystals for displays, effect pigments for coatings and cosmetics, and high-purity chemicals for the electronics industry.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

Merck Group places a strong emphasis on research and development (R&D) to drive innovation across its business sectors. The company invests significantly in R&D, focusing on developing new therapies and technologies that address unmet medical and scientific needs.

Global Presence[edit | edit source]

With operations in 66 countries, the Merck Group has a significant global presence. Its products are sold in virtually every country in the world, and it employs approximately 57,000 people worldwide.

Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility[edit | edit source]

The Merck Group is committed to sustainability and corporate responsibility, with initiatives aimed at improving health and well-being, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring ethical business practices.

Controversies and Challenges[edit | edit source]

Like many companies in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, the Merck Group has faced its share of controversies and challenges, including legal and ethical issues related to product safety and environmental practices. The company actively works to address these challenges through compliance, governance, and sustainability efforts.

Merck KGaA and Merck & Co.[edit | edit source]

It is important to note the distinction between the Merck Group (Merck KGaA) and Merck & Co., Inc. Due to a series of historical events and agreements, the two are separate entities, with Merck & Co. operating in the United States and Canada, and the Merck Group operating in the rest of the world.
