Mesembryanthemum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Aizoaceae. The name is derived from the Greek words mesos, meaning "middle," and embryon, meaning "fruit," referring to the position of the fruit in the plant. Commonly known as ice plants or midday flowers, Mesembryanthemum species are native to southern Africa, where they are found in a variety of habitats, from coastal areas to dry inland regions. These plants are well-adapted to arid environments, making them popular in xeriscaping and drought-tolerant landscaping.

Mesembryanthemum species are annual or perennial plants, often succulent, with fleshy leaves that are sometimes covered in small crystals, giving them a sparkling appearance as if covered in frost.
