Mesembryanthemum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Aizoaceae. The name is derived from the Greek words mesos, meaning "middle," and embryon, meaning "fruit," referring to the position of the fruit in the plant. Commonly known as ice plants or midday flowers, Mesembryanthemum species are native to southern Africa, where they are found in a variety of habitats, from coastal areas to dry inland regions. These plants are well-adapted to arid environments, making them popular in xeriscaping and drought-tolerant landscaping.

Description[edit | edit source]

Mesembryanthemum species are annual or perennial plants, often succulent, with fleshy leaves that are sometimes covered in small crystals, giving them a sparkling appearance as if covered in frost. The flowers of Mesembryanthemum are typically large and colorful, ranging from white to pink, purple, or yellow. They usually open in the full sun during the day and close in the evening or on cloudy days.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

The taxonomy of Mesembryanthemum has been subject to revision, with many species formerly included in this genus now reclassified into other genera within the Aizoaceae family. However, Mesembryanthemum still includes a significant number of species, and its classification within the Aizoaceae is supported by both morphological and molecular data.

Cultivation and Uses[edit | edit source]

Mesembryanthemum species are popular in gardens and landscapes for their drought resistance and vibrant flowers. They are used in rock gardens, as ground cover, or in containers. These plants prefer well-drained soil and full sun, and once established, they require minimal water. In addition to their ornamental value, some species of Mesembryanthemum are edible and have been used in traditional medicine for their purported health benefits.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While many Mesembryanthemum species are common and not considered at risk, some are threatened by habitat loss and overcollection. Conservation efforts are important to ensure the survival of these unique plants in their natural habitats.
