Metairie is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Metairie is located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and is bordered by New Orleans to the east and Kenner to the west.

Metairie was first settled by the French in the 1720s. The name "Metairie" is derived from the French word "métairie," which means a small farm. The area was originally used for farming and agriculture. Over time, Metairie developed into a suburban community.
