American cancer epidemiologist

Mia M. Gaudet

Mia M. Gaudet is an American cancer epidemiologist known for her research on the epidemiology of breast cancer and other cancers. She has contributed significantly to understanding the role of genetic and environmental factors in cancer development.

Education[edit | edit source]

Gaudet completed her undergraduate studies in biology at Emory University. She then pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she developed an interest in epidemiology. Gaudet earned her PhD in epidemiology from the same institution, focusing her research on cancer epidemiology.

Career[edit | edit source]

Gaudet began her career as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where she worked on large-scale studies of breast cancer. Her work at the NCI involved analyzing data from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium and other major epidemiological studies.

In 2011, Gaudet joined the American Cancer Society (ACS) as the Strategic Director of Breast and Gynecologic Cancer Research. At the ACS, she led research initiatives aimed at understanding the causes and prevention of breast and gynecologic cancers. Her work has been instrumental in identifying risk factors and potential preventive measures for these cancers.

Research[edit | edit source]

Gaudet's research focuses on the interplay between genetic predispositions and environmental exposures in the development of cancer. She has published extensively on the role of hormones, lifestyle factors, and genetic mutations in breast cancer risk. Her studies often utilize large cohort data to identify patterns and correlations that can inform public health strategies.

One of Gaudet's notable contributions is her work on the genetic epidemiology of breast cancer, where she has explored how genetic variants interact with lifestyle factors to influence cancer risk. Her research has helped to clarify the complex relationships between BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and other risk factors.

Professional Affiliations[edit | edit source]

Gaudet is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER). She frequently presents her findings at national and international conferences, contributing to the global dialogue on cancer prevention and control.
