Michael Bliss (1941–2017) was a prominent Canadian historian and author, known for his extensive work on the history of medicine and Canadian business history. He was a professor at the University of Toronto and a member of the Royal Society of Canada.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Michael Bliss was born on January 18, 1941, in Leamington, Ontario. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, where he later earned his Ph.D. in history.

Academic Career[edit | edit source]

Bliss began his teaching career at the University of Toronto in 1968, where he became a full professor in 1978. He was known for his engaging lectures and his ability to bring historical events to life for his students. Bliss retired from teaching in 2006 but continued to write and contribute to historical scholarship.

Contributions to Medical History[edit | edit source]

Bliss is perhaps best known for his work in the history of medicine. His biography of Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin, is considered a seminal work in the field. Bliss's other notable works include "The Discovery of Insulin" and "Harvey Cushing: A Life in Surgery," both of which have been praised for their meticulous research and engaging narrative style.

In addition to his work on medical history, Bliss made significant contributions to the study of Canadian business history. His book "Northern Enterprise: Five Centuries of Canadian Business" is a comprehensive overview of the development of business in Canada from the early days of European settlement to the modern era.

Throughout his career, Bliss received numerous awards and honors. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013 and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He also received the Jason A. Hannah Medal from the Royal Society of Canada for his work in the history of medicine.
