Michael Broadbent[edit | edit source]

Michael Broadbent was a British wine critic, writer, and auctioneer. He was a leading authority on wine tasting and wine history, and his contributions to the wine industry have been recognized worldwide.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Michael Broadbent was born on May 2, 1927, in Yorkshire, England. He studied architecture before his interest in wine led him to change his career path.

Career[edit | edit source]

Broadbent started his career in the wine industry in 1952 when he joined the London wine merchant Harvey's of Bristol. He later moved to Christie's in 1966, where he established the auction house's wine department. He remained at Christie's until his retirement in 1992, during which time he conducted numerous high-profile wine auctions.

Contributions to the Wine Industry[edit | edit source]

Broadbent is credited with reviving the practice of wine auctions, which had largely fallen out of favor in the early 20th century. His detailed tasting notes and ratings, which he began compiling in the 1950s, are considered a valuable resource for wine enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Broadbent has also written several books on wine, including "The Great Vintage Wine Book" and "Michael Broadbent's Wine Tasting". His writings have been influential in shaping the modern understanding of wine tasting and appreciation.

Recognition and Awards[edit | edit source]

In recognition of his contributions to the wine industry, Broadbent was made a Master of Wine in 1970. He was also awarded the Decanter Man of the Year award in 1993 and the Vintners' Company's highest award, the Vintners' Medal, in 2003.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]
