Michael Palin
Michael Palin (born 5 May 1943) is an English comedian, actor, writer, and television presenter. He is best known for being a member of the Monty Python comedy group, as well as for his travel documentaries.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Michael Edward Palin was born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. He attended Birkdale School, Shrewsbury School, and later Brasenose College, Oxford, where he studied modern history.
Career[edit | edit source]
Monty Python[edit | edit source]
Palin is one of the founding members of the Monty Python comedy group, which was formed in 1969. The group created the television show Monty Python's Flying Circus, which aired from 1969 to 1974. Palin was known for his versatility and played a wide range of characters in the show. He also co-wrote many of the sketches with fellow Python member Terry Jones.
Post-Python Work[edit | edit source]
After Monty Python, Palin continued to work in television and film. He starred in and co-wrote the series Ripping Yarns with Terry Jones. He also appeared in several films, including A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures.
Travel Documentaries[edit | edit source]
In the late 1980s, Palin began a new career as a travel documentarian. His first travel series, Around the World in 80 Days with Michael Palin, aired in 1989. This was followed by several other travel series, including Pole to Pole, Full Circle with Michael Palin, and Himalaya with Michael Palin. These series were accompanied by books that Palin authored, detailing his experiences.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Michael Palin married Helen Gibbins in 1966, and they have three children. He is known for his charitable work and has been involved with several organizations, including Action for Stammering Children.
Honors and Awards[edit | edit source]
Palin has received numerous awards for his work in comedy and television. In 2000, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to television. In 2019, he was knighted for his services to travel, culture, and geography.
