Michele Mercati
Michele Mercati (1541 – 1593) was an Italian physician and naturalist. He is considered one of the pioneers in the field of archaeology and paleontology. Mercati was born in San Miniato, a town in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. He was educated in medicine and natural history at the University of Pisa.

Michele Mercati was born into a noble family in San Miniato. He pursued his studies at the University of Pisa, where he was trained in medicine and natural history. His education was influenced by the Renaissance humanism that emphasized the study of classical texts and the natural world.

Mercati served as the superintendent of the Vatican Botanical Garden under Pope Pius V, Pope Gregory XIII, and Pope Sixtus V. His role involved the management and expansion of the garden, as well as the collection and classification of plants and minerals.

Mercati is best known for his work in archaeology and paleontology. He was one of the first to recognize the significance of fossils and stone tools as evidence of prehistoric life. His observations and collections laid the groundwork for future studies in these fields.

One of Mercati's most significant contributions is his work titled Metallotheca, which was published posthumously in 1717.
