Microcentrum is a genus of insects belonging to the family Tettigoniidae, commonly known as the katydids or bush crickets. This genus is primarily found in North America, where its members are known for their large size and the distinctive shape of their forewings, which often resemble leaves, providing them with camouflage in their natural habitats. The species within this genus are predominantly green, aiding in their camouflage among foliage where they are most commonly found.

Description[edit | edit source]

Species of Microcentrum are characterized by their large size compared to other katydids, with some species reaching lengths of up to 2 inches (5 cm). They have elongated bodies, large hind legs adapted for jumping, and long antennae that can exceed their body length. The forewings are developed into structures that mimic leaves, complete with veins and sometimes brown spots that resemble leaf damage or decay, enhancing their camouflage. These adaptations make them difficult to spot in their natural environments, which typically consist of trees and shrubs.

Behavior[edit | edit source]

Microcentrum species are primarily nocturnal and are known for their loud, chirping calls, which males produce by rubbing their wings together, a behavior known as stridulation. These calls are used to attract females for mating. The diet of Microcentrum species mainly consists of leaves, flowers, and sometimes small insects, making them both herbivorous and occasionally predatory.

Reproduction[edit | edit source]

The reproductive cycle of Microcentrum involves the female laying eggs on the stems or leaves of plants. These eggs overwinter and hatch in the spring, giving rise to nymphs that undergo several molts before reaching adulthood. The lifecycle from egg to adult can vary in length, largely depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity.

Species[edit | edit source]

There are several species within the Microcentrum genus, including the well-known Microcentrum rhombifolium (Angular-winged Katydid) and Microcentrum retinerve (Greater Angle-wing Katydid). Each species has its unique characteristics, but all share the common traits that define the genus.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Currently, there are no significant conservation concerns for Microcentrum species as a whole. They are widespread and relatively abundant within their range. However, like many insects, they could be susceptible to habitat loss and the widespread use of pesticides, which could impact their populations.

In Culture[edit | edit source]

Due to their distinctive calls, Microcentrum species have been noted in various cultural contexts, often being associated with the late summer and early fall seasons when their calls are most prominent.
