Midleton (whiskey)

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Midleton is a brand of Irish whiskey produced in the Midleton Distillery, located in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland. The distillery is owned by Pernod Ricard, a French company that produces alcoholic beverages. Midleton whiskey is renowned for its smooth and complex flavor profile, which is a result of the traditional distillation process used at the Midleton Distillery.

History[edit | edit source]

The Midleton Distillery was established in the 1825 by the Murphy Brothers. The distillery was modernized in the 1970s, with the new distillery commencing production in 1975. The old distillery, now a visitor center, is home to the world's largest pot still, which has a capacity of over 31,000 gallons.

Production[edit | edit source]

Midleton whiskey is produced using a mix of malted and unmalted barley. The barley is dried in closed kilns, ensuring it is not exposed to smoke, a process that contributes to the whiskey's smooth and light flavor. The whiskey is triple distilled in copper pot stills, a process that further contributes to its smoothness.

The whiskey is then aged in oak casks for a minimum of three years, with some expressions aged for much longer. The aging process allows the whiskey to develop a complex flavor profile, with notes of vanilla, spice, and dried fruit.

Varieties[edit | edit source]

There are several varieties of Midleton whiskey, including:

  • Midleton Very Rare: A premium blend that is released annually. Each bottle is individually numbered and signed by the Master Distiller.
  • Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy: Named after the distillery's former Master Distiller, this is a single pot still whiskey with a rich and complex flavor.
  • Midleton Dair Ghaelach: A single pot still whiskey that is aged in Irish oak casks, giving it a unique flavor profile.

Awards[edit | edit source]

Midleton whiskey has won numerous awards for its quality and flavor. These include multiple gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Wine and Spirit Competition.
