James Michael Johnson (born January 30, 1972) is an American attorney, politician, and member of the Republican Party who has served as the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 4th congressional district since 2017. He is also the current Chair of the House Republican Conference, a position he has held since January 3, 2021.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Mike Johnson was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995 and a Juris Doctor from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1998.

Legal career[edit | edit source]

Before entering politics, Johnson worked as an attorney specializing in constitutional law. He served as a senior attorney and spokesperson for the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal advocacy group.

Louisiana House of Representatives[edit | edit source]

Johnson began his political career in the Louisiana House of Representatives, where he served from 2015 to 2017. During his tenure, he was known for his conservative stance on social issues and his advocacy for religious freedom.

U.S. House of Representatives[edit | edit source]

In 2016, Johnson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Louisiana's 4th congressional district. He succeeded John Fleming, who did not seek re-election. Johnson has been re-elected in subsequent elections and has served on several key committees, including the House Judiciary Committee and the House Armed Services Committee.

Chair of the House Republican Conference[edit | edit source]

In January 2021, Johnson was elected as the Chair of the House Republican Conference, succeeding Liz Cheney. In this role, he is responsible for leading the messaging and strategy of the House Republican caucus.

Political positions[edit | edit source]

Johnson is known for his conservative views on a range of issues, including opposition to abortion, support for gun rights, and advocacy for limited government. He has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and has aligned himself with the House Freedom Caucus.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Johnson is married to Kelly Lary, and they have four children. The family resides in Bossier Parish, Louisiana.
