Mike Rio (born July 6, 1981) is an American mixed martial artist who competed in the lightweight division. He is best known for his appearances in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and his participation in The Ultimate Fighter: Live.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Mike Rio was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He attended Miami Southridge Senior High School, where he excelled in wrestling. Rio continued his wrestling career at Lindenwood University and later at Coker University, where he earned All-American honors.

Mixed Martial Arts Career[edit | edit source]

Early Career[edit | edit source]

Rio began his professional mixed martial arts career in 2008. He quickly made a name for himself on the regional circuit, amassing an impressive record before being noticed by larger promotions.

The Ultimate Fighter[edit | edit source]

In 2012, Rio was selected to participate in The Ultimate Fighter: Live, the fifteenth season of the UFC's reality television series. He was a member of Team Cruz, coached by then-UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. Rio won his preliminary fight to earn a spot in the house but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Andy Ogle.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit | edit source]

Rio made his official UFC debut on December 15, 2012, at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Carwin vs. Team Nelson Finale, where he faced John Cofer. Rio won the fight via submission in the third round, earning him his first UFC victory.

Rio's next fight was against Francisco Trinaldo on May 18, 2013, at UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Rockhold. He lost the fight via submission in the first round. Rio then faced Daron Cruickshank on January 25, 2014, at UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Thomson, where he lost via TKO in the second round. Following this loss, Rio was released from the UFC.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Outside of fighting, Mike Rio is known for his work as a wrestling coach. He has coached at various high schools and colleges, sharing his expertise and passion for the sport with younger athletes.
