Minnetonka is a suburban city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The name comes from the Dakota language meaning "great water". The city is located eight miles west of Minneapolis.

The area was originally home to the Dakota Sioux who were followed by the Ojibwe from the north. The first European settlers arrived in the 1850s, and the city was officially incorporated in 1956.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Minnetonka is characterized by its lakes and wetlands, with Lake Minnetonka being a prominent feature. The city covers a total area of 28.22 square miles, of which 1.29 square miles is water.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, Minnetonka had a population of 53,781. The city is part of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, which is the largest urban area in Minnesota.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Minnetonka is home to the headquarters of several major companies, including Cargill, the largest privately held corporation in the United States, and UnitedHealth Group, a major health care company.
Education[edit | edit source]
The city is served by the Minnetonka Public Schools district, which includes Minnetonka High School, one of the top-ranked high schools in the state.
Parks and Recreation[edit | edit source]
Minnetonka offers numerous parks and recreational facilities, including the Minnetonka Community Center and the Minnetonka Ice Arena.
