The Mir-3180 microRNA precursor family is a group of microRNAs that are involved in the regulation of gene expression in eukaryotic cells. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, non-coding RNA molecules, typically about 22 nucleotides in length, that play a critical role in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. They function by binding to complementary sequences on target messenger RNA (mRNA) transcripts, usually resulting in gene silencing through translational repression or target degradation.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The Mir-3180 microRNA precursor is transcribed as a primary miRNA (pri-miRNA) that forms a characteristic hairpin structure. This hairpin is recognized and processed by the Drosha-DGCR8 complex in the nucleus to produce a precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is then exported to the cytoplasm. In the cytoplasm, the pre-miRNA is further processed by the Dicer enzyme to generate the mature miRNA duplex. One strand of this duplex, the guide strand, is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), where it can interact with target mRNAs.

The primary function of the Mir-3180 microRNA family, like other miRNAs, is to regulate gene expression. This regulation is achieved through the binding of the miRNA to complementary sequences in the 3' untranslated regions (3' UTRs) of target mRNAs. The binding of miRNAs to their targets can lead to mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation, thereby reducing the expression of the target gene.

MicroRNAs, including those in the Mir-3180 family, are involved in a wide range of biological processes, such as cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and metabolism.
