The Miryang hospital fire was a devastating fire that occurred on January 26, 2018, at a hospital in Miryang, South Korea. The fire resulted in the deaths of 41 people and injured 153 others, making it one of the deadliest fires in South Korea in recent years.

Background[edit | edit source]

The fire broke out at Sejong Hospital, a facility that included a nursing home and a hospital. The hospital was located in the city of Miryang, which is situated in the southeastern part of South Korea. The facility was known for providing care to elderly patients and those with chronic illnesses.

The Fire[edit | edit source]

The fire started at approximately 7:30 AM KST in the emergency room on the first floor of the hospital. The cause of the fire was later determined to be an electrical fault. The fire quickly spread through the building, causing thick smoke to fill the hospital, which made evacuation efforts difficult.

Response[edit | edit source]

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after the fire was reported. Firefighters and rescue teams worked to evacuate patients and staff from the building. Despite their efforts, the rapid spread of the fire and the dense smoke resulted in a high number of casualties.

Casualties[edit | edit source]

A total of 41 people lost their lives in the fire, and 153 others were injured. Many of the victims were elderly patients who had limited mobility, making it difficult for them to escape the building. The high number of casualties highlighted the need for improved fire safety measures in medical facilities.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

In the wake of the fire, there was a national outcry for better fire safety regulations and enforcement in South Korea. The government conducted investigations into the fire and reviewed safety protocols in hospitals and other care facilities. The incident also led to discussions about the need for better emergency preparedness and response strategies.
