Misal
Misal is a popular traditional dish originating from the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a spicy curry usually made from moth beans (matki) and is served with pav (a type of Indian bread roll). The dish is garnished with farsan, onions, lemon and coriander. Misal is known for its high nutritional value and is often consumed for breakfast or lunch.
History[edit | edit source]
The exact origins of Misal are unknown, but it is believed to have been first prepared in the kitchens of Maharashtra. Over time, the dish has evolved with regional variations, each with its unique taste and presentation. The most popular versions are Kolhapuri Misal, Puneri Misal, Nashik Misal, and Mumbai Misal, each named after the city or region where they originated.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
The preparation of Misal involves two main parts - the matki usal (moth beans curry) and the spicy rassa (gravy). The usal is prepared by soaking and sprouting moth beans, which are then cooked with onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic and a blend of spices. The rassa is a spicy gravy made from onions, coconut, and a mix of spices. The usal and rassa are served together, topped with farsan, chopped onions, coriander, and a squeeze of lemon. Misal is typically served with pav, which is lightly toasted and buttered.
Variations[edit | edit source]
Different regions of Maharashtra have their unique variations of Misal. The Kolhapuri Misal is known for its fiery heat and is the spiciest version. The Puneri Misal from Pune is milder and uses poha (flattened rice) in its preparation. The Nashik Misal is known for its unique taste due to the use of "kala masala", a special blend of spices. The Mumbai Misal is a balanced version, neither too spicy nor too mild, and is often served with a side of yogurt to balance the heat.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Misal holds a significant place in Maharashtrian cuisine and culture. It is a common street food and is also served in restaurants and food stalls across the state. The dish is often consumed for breakfast or lunch and is popular for its high nutritional value. Misal is also a popular choice during festivals and family gatherings.
