Molecular

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Molecular biology is a branch of biology that concerns the molecular basis of biological activity in and between cells, including molecular synthesis, modification, mechanisms and interactions. The central dogma of molecular biology describes the process by which the information in genes flows into proteins: DNA → RNA → protein.

History[edit | edit source]

The term "molecular biology" was first used by Warren Weaver in 1938. Molecular biology was established as an independent discipline in the 1930s and 1940s, with the discovery of the structure of DNA.

Techniques[edit | edit source]

Molecular biology techniques are common methods used in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and biophysics which generally involve manipulation and analysis of DNA, RNA, protein, and lipid.

Branches and related fields[edit | edit source]

Molecular biology is a field of science that overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry.
