Molva molva
Molva molva, commonly known as the Common ling or simply the ling, is a large member of the Gadidae family, which also includes well-known species such as the Atlantic cod and Haddock. It is the only member of the genus Molva.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Molva molva is a long, slender fish that can reach lengths of up to 2 meters and weights of up to 60 kilograms. It has a small head and a large mouth with sharp teeth. The body is usually a dark brown or greenish color on the top, with a lighter underside.
Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]
The Molva molva is found in the North Atlantic Ocean, from the Bay of Biscay to the Arctic Circle, and from Greenland and Newfoundland to the northern British Isles. It prefers deep, cold waters and is usually found at depths of between 200 and 400 meters.
Diet[edit | edit source]
The diet of the Molva molva consists mainly of fish, including species such as herring, mackerel, and squid. It is also known to eat crustaceans and cephalopods.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
The Molva molva is a batch spawner, with females releasing several batches of eggs over a period of a few weeks. The eggs are buoyant and float to the surface, where they are fertilized by the males. The larvae then hatch and begin to feed on plankton.
Commercial importance[edit | edit source]
The Molva molva is commercially fished in many parts of its range. The flesh is white and firm and is considered a delicacy in many countries. It is often smoked or salted and is also used in the production of fish meal and oil.
Conservation status[edit | edit source]
The Molva molva is currently listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, overfishing and habitat degradation are potential threats to its population.
