- Monticello was platted in 1841, and it was named after the plantation of President Thomas Jefferson. The city was incorporated on April 6, 1868.

- Monticello is located at 42°14′26″N 91°11′15″W (42.240520, -91.187571). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.15 square miles (10.75 km2), all land.
