Moon.Ribas

Moon Ribas (born 24 May 1985) is a Catalan avant-garde artist and cyborg activist best known for her work in developing and using sensory extensions. She co-founded the Cyborg Foundation with Neil Harbisson in 2010, an international organization that aims to help humans become cyborgs, defend cyborg rights, and promote cyborg art.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Moon Ribas was born in Mataró, a city in Catalonia, Spain. She studied at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and later attended the Dartington College of Arts in England, where she focused on experimental dance and choreography. Ribas also studied at the Cyborg Foundation.

Career[edit | edit source]

Ribas is known for her innovative work in cyborg art, a form of art that integrates technology with the human body. She has developed various sensory extensions, including a seismic sensor implanted in her arm that allows her to feel earthquakes in real-time. This sensory extension, which she calls the "Seismic Sense," enables her to perceive the vibrations of earthquakes through small vibrations in her arm.

Seismic Sense[edit | edit source]

The Seismic Sense is one of Ribas' most notable projects. It consists of an online seismic sensor connected to her arm via a small implant. The sensor detects seismic activity worldwide and sends vibrations to her arm, allowing her to feel the intensity and duration of earthquakes. Ribas has used this sensory extension in various performances, where she translates the seismic data into dance movements.

Cyborg Foundation[edit | edit source]

In 2010, Ribas co-founded the Cyborg Foundation with Neil Harbisson, the first person officially recognized as a cyborg by a government. The foundation's mission is to help people become cyborgs, defend cyborg rights, and promote cyborg art. The foundation has been involved in various projects and initiatives to support the integration of technology with the human body.

Performances and Exhibitions[edit | edit source]

Ribas has performed and exhibited her work internationally. Her performances often involve the use of her Seismic Sense to create dance pieces that respond to real-time seismic activity. She has presented her work at various festivals, conferences, and art venues around the world.

Philosophy and Advocacy[edit | edit source]

Ribas advocates for the integration of technology with the human body to enhance sensory perception and expand human capabilities. She believes that becoming a cyborg can help humans better understand and connect with the natural world. Ribas also promotes the idea of transhumanism, the belief in the use of advanced technology to enhance human physical and cognitive abilities.
