Moore is a common surname in many English-speaking countries and is of Gaelic/Scottish origin. The name means "open land" or "bog" and was given to individuals who lived near a moor or a bog. There are also several other unrelated families with the surname Moore in Ireland.

In some cases, it may be a topographic name for someone who lived on a moor or in a fen, both of which were denoted by the Old English terms mor and fearn. In other cases, it may be a habitational name for someone who lived in one of the various places named Moore, for example in Cheshire or Shropshire.
