Julianne Moore (born December 3, 1960) is an American actress and author. Known for her portrayals of emotionally troubled women in both independent and blockbuster films, she has received numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Emmy Awards.

Julianne Moore was born Julie Anne Smith in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Her father, Peter Moore Smith, was a paratrooper in the United States Army, and her mother, Anne Love, was a psychologist and social worker from Scotland. Due to her father's military career, Moore frequently moved around the world during her childhood, living in places such as Alaska, Panama, and Germany.

Moore attended Boston University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre in 1983. After graduation, she moved to New York City to pursue an acting career.
