Moore County, Tennessee

Moore County, Tennessee is a county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 6,461, making it the second-least populous county in Tennessee. The county seat and only incorporated city is Lynchburg. Moore County is part of the Tullahoma-Manchester Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Moore County was established in 1871 from parts of Lincoln, Bedford, and Franklin counties. It was named in honor of General William Moore, an early settler and prominent figure in the area.

Geography[edit | edit source]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 130 square miles (340 km²), of which 129 square miles (330 km²) is land and 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²) (0.8%) is water. The county is characterized by its rolling hills and fertile valleys, which are part of the Highland Rim.

As of the 2020 census, there were 6,461 people, 2,500 households, and 1,800 families residing in the county. The population density was 50 people per square mile (19/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Moore County is best known for being the home of the Jack Daniel's distillery, which is a major tourist attraction and economic driver for the area. The distillery is located in Lynchburg and is the oldest registered distillery in the United States.

The county is served by the Moore County School District, which includes Lynchburg Elementary School and Moore County High School.
