Morgan's Wonderland
Morgan's Wonderland is a non-profit theme park located in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It is unique for being the first theme park designed with individuals with disabilities in mind, although it is built for everyone's enjoyment. The park was opened in April 2010 and spans 25 acres. It was founded by Gordon Hartman, a former homebuilder, who was inspired to create the park after observing his daughter, Morgan, who has cognitive and physical challenges, interact with other children.
History[edit | edit source]
The idea for Morgan's Wonderland began in 2005 when Gordon Hartman saw the need for a place where individuals of all abilities could play and interact without barriers. After selling his homebuilding business, Hartman used the proceeds to fund the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation, which focuses on helping the special-needs community. The foundation played a pivotal role in the development and funding of Morgan's Wonderland. The park was constructed with the input from doctors, teachers, parents, and therapists to ensure it would be fully accessible and enjoyable for individuals with a wide range of disabilities.
Features[edit | edit source]
Morgan's Wonderland features more than 25 attractions, including rides, playgrounds, gardens, an amphitheater, a fishing lake, and a custom-designed carousel that accommodates wheelchairs. One of the park's most notable attractions is the Wonderland Express, a train that takes guests on a scenic tour around the park. The park also includes the Sensory Village, an area with interactive displays designed to stimulate the senses in a controlled environment.
All areas of the park are wheelchair-accessible, and special consideration has been given to the needs of those with sensory and cognitive challenges. The park employs a "pay it forward" admission policy for guests with special needs, offering them free entry.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Morgan's Wonderland has received widespread acclaim for its inclusive design and positive impact on the community. It serves as a model for other theme parks and recreational facilities aiming to be more inclusive of individuals with disabilities. The park has also hosted various events and programs designed to foster inclusivity, understanding, and acceptance.
Expansion[edit | edit source]
Following the success of Morgan's Wonderland, the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation has expanded its efforts to include Morgan's Inspiration Island, a fully accessible water park that opened adjacent to Morgan's Wonderland in 2017. This expansion continues the foundation's mission to provide inclusive recreational opportunities for individuals of all abilities.
Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]
Morgan's Wonderland has been recognized with several awards for its innovative approach to accessibility and inclusion. These accolades highlight the park's role in promoting understanding and acceptance of individuals with disabilities within the broader community.
