San Antonio

San Antonio is the seventh-most populous city in the United States and the second-most populous city in the state of Texas. With a population of over 1.5 million, it serves as the seat of Bexar County.

San Antonio was founded in 1718 as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost, and it became the first chartered civil settlement in present-day Texas in 1731. The city's deep history is contrasted with its rapid growth over the past few decades. It was the fastest-growing of the top ten largest cities in the United States from 2000 to 2010.

San Antonio is located in South Central Texas. The city features a mix of hills and flat land, with notable landmarks such as the San Antonio River and the Alamo.

Economy[edit | edit source]

San Antonio's economy is focused primarily on military, health care, government civil service, financial services, oil and gas, and tourism. The city is home to six Fortune 500 companies and the South Texas Medical Center, a conglomerate of various hospitals, clinics, and research institutions.

Culture[edit | edit source]

San Antonio is known for its strong Hispanic influence and historic sites, such as the Alamo and River Walk. The city also hosts the annual Fiesta San Antonio, a local tradition since 1891.

San Antonio hosts over 100,000 students across its 31 higher-education institutions, including University of Texas, San Antonio College, and Trinity University.

Sports[edit | edit source]

San Antonio is home to the San Antonio Spurs, a professional basketball team in the NBA. The city also hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest rodeos in the country.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

San Antonio is served by two major freeways, Interstate 10 and Interstate 35, and the San Antonio International Airport.
