Morris Kirksey 1920

Morris Marshall Kirksey (September 13, 1895 – November 25, 1981) was an American athlete who competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics. He is notable for winning two medals in athletics and for being a part of the first gold medal-winning rugby union team in Olympic history.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Morris Kirksey was born in Waxahachie, Texas. He later moved to California where he attended Stanford University. At Stanford, he excelled in both track and field and rugby.

Athletic Career[edit | edit source]

Kirksey's athletic career is distinguished by his versatility and success in multiple sports. He was a sprinter and a rugby player, achieving significant accomplishments in both disciplines.

Track and Field[edit | edit source]

In the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium, Kirksey won a silver medal in the 100 meters and a gold medal as part of the 4 × 100 meters relay team. His performance in the 100 meters was particularly notable as he finished second to Charles Paddock, another American sprinter.

Rugby Union[edit | edit source]

Kirksey was also a member of the American rugby union team that competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics. The team won the gold medal, marking the first time rugby union was included in the Olympic Games. This victory remains a significant part of American rugby history.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After his athletic career, Kirksey continued to be involved in sports and contributed to the development of athletics and rugby in the United States. He passed away on November 25, 1981, in San Mateo, California.
