Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital and Sanctuary

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital and Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary and hospital located near Mousehole, a village in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It was founded in 1928 by Dorothy and Phyllis Yglesias.

The hospital provides care for both land and sea birds, with the goal of healing and releasing them back into the wild. If a bird is unable to be released, it is given sanctuary for the remainder of its life. Birds that are beyond help are humanely euthanized.

On average, the hospital treats around 1000 birds each year and houses approximately 80 permanent residents. The dedicated staff work year-round to care for the birds, following the same traditions established by the founders.

The Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital and Sanctuary gained recognition during the 1967 Torrey Canyon disaster, when it played a crucial role in rehabilitating over 8,000 oiled birds.
