Muar town
Muar is a historical town and the capital of Muar District, Johor, Malaysia. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Malaysia due to its rich cultural heritage and easy accessibility from both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
History[edit | edit source]
Muar's history dates back to prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence suggesting that the area has been inhabited for over a thousand years. The town was once known as Bandar Maharani, "Town of the Empress", in honor of the Sultanah of Johor at the time.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Muar is located at the mouth of the Muar River, on the southwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is bordered by Segamat to the north, Batu Pahat to the east, and the Malacca Strait to the west.

The economy of Muar is largely based on agriculture, particularly oil palm and rubber plantations. The town is also known for its furniture industry, producing a significant portion of Malaysia's furniture exports.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Muar is renowned for its food, particularly its otak-otak, a type of grilled fish cake, and Mee Bandung Muar, a noodle dish unique to the town. The town is also known for its traditional Malay houses, many of which have been preserved and restored.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Muar is well-connected by road to other parts of Malaysia. The North-South Expressway provides a direct link to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The town is also served by a number of bus services, providing connections to other towns and cities in Johor and beyond.
