Mucin 7
Mucin 7 (MUC7) is a type of mucin, which is a high molecular weight, glycosylated protein produced by epithelial tissues in many parts of the body. Mucins play a crucial role in protecting and lubricating the surfaces of these tissues. MUC7, in particular, is predominantly found in the saliva and plays a significant role in the maintenance of oral health. It is encoded by the MUC7 gene.

MUC7 helps in lubricating the oral cavity and protecting the teeth and mucosal surfaces from microbial invasion and physical damage. It achieves this by binding to microorganisms and facilitating their removal from the oral environment, thus contributing to the body's innate defense mechanisms. Additionally, MUC7 interacts with other components of saliva to help in the initial digestion of food and maintenance of oral hygiene.

The MUC7 gene is located on human chromosome 4.
