A muffin tin is a type of bakeware that is specifically designed for the baking of muffins and cupcakes. It is typically made from metal, silicone, or ceramic materials and features multiple small, round cups or molds in which the batter is placed before baking.

The muffin tin has a long history, with its origins tracing back to the early days of baking. The first muffin tins were made from cast iron and were used in the 18th century in England. The use of muffin tins spread to the United States in the 19th century, where they were used to make American muffins, a type of quick bread that is leavened with baking powder or baking soda.

Muffin tins come in various sizes, with the standard size having twelve cups. Each cup is typically about 2 inches in diameter and 1 inch deep, although sizes can vary. Some muffin tins have non-stick coatings to make it easier to remove the baked goods after they are done.

To use a muffin tin, the baker first greases the cups with butter or cooking spray, or lines them with paper or silicone muffin cups. The batter is then spooned into the cups, filling them about two-thirds full. The tin is then placed in a preheated oven and the muffins or cupcakes are baked until they are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

There are several variations of the muffin tin, including the mini muffin tin, which has smaller cups for making bite-sized muffins or cupcakes, and the jumbo muffin tin, which has larger cups for making oversized muffins or cupcakes. There are also specialty muffin tins available, such as those designed for making popovers or Yorkshire puddings.
