Muscle fatigue

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Muscle Fatigue is a phenomenon experienced during strenuous exercise or physical activity, characterized by a decline in the ability of a muscle to generate force. It can be a result of vigorous exercise but can also occur due to illness, a side effect of certain medications, or as a symptom of certain chronic conditions.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Muscle fatigue can be caused by a variety of factors, including lactic acid build-up in the muscles, depletion of glycogen stores, and dehydration. Other factors can include lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and certain medical conditions such as anemia and hypothyroidism.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of muscle fatigue can include a feeling of weakness, difficulty in initiating or sustaining muscle contractions, and a decrease in performance or endurance. Other symptoms can include muscle soreness, shortness of breath, and an increased heart rate.

Prevention and Treatment[edit | edit source]

Prevention and treatment of muscle fatigue can involve a combination of rest, proper nutrition, and hydration. In some cases, medical treatment may be necessary, particularly if muscle fatigue is a symptom of an underlying medical condition.
