Nancy Patricia Pelosi (née D'Alesandro; born March 26, 1940) is an American politician who served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. She is a member of the Democratic Party and has represented California's 12th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 1987. Pelosi is the first woman to have served as Speaker of the House.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Nancy Pelosi was born on March 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, to an Italian-American family. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., was a Democratic congressman from Maryland and a mayor of Baltimore. Her mother, Annunciata M. "Nancy" D'Alesandro, was active in Democratic politics, organizing Democratic women. Pelosi graduated from the Institute of Notre Dame, an all-girls Catholic high school in Baltimore, and then from Trinity Washington University in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science.
Early political career[edit | edit source]
Pelosi began her political career as an intern for Senator Daniel Brewster (D-MD) in the 1960s. She moved to San Francisco in 1969, where she worked her way up in Democratic politics, eventually becoming the chair of the California Democratic Party in 1981. In 1987, she won a special election to succeed Sala Burton in California's 5th congressional district.
U.S. House of Representatives[edit | edit source]
Pelosi has served in the House of Representatives since June 2, 1987. She has represented three different districts during her tenure: the 5th district (1987–1993), the 8th district (1993–2013), and the 12th district (2013–2023). Pelosi has been a key figure in the Democratic Party, serving as the House Minority Whip from 2002 to 2003, the House Minority Leader from 2003 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2019, and the Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
Speaker of the House[edit | edit source]
Pelosi was first elected Speaker of the House on January 4, 2007, becoming the first woman to hold the position. During her first term as Speaker, she was instrumental in the passage of major legislation, including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010. She lost the speakership in 2011 when the Republicans gained control of the House but regained it in 2019 after the Democrats won back the House in the 2018 midterm elections. During her second term as Speaker, she oversaw the passage of significant legislation such as the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Nancy Pelosi married Paul Pelosi in 1963. They have five children: Nancy Corinne, Christine, Jacqueline, Paul, and Alexandra. Pelosi is also a grandmother to nine grandchildren. She resides in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.
