Napa Valley AVA

The Napa Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Napa County, California, United States. Napa Valley is considered one of the premier wine regions in the world. Records of commercial wine production in the region date back to the nineteenth century, but premium wine production dates back only to the 1960s.

History[edit | edit source]

The Napa Valley AVA was established in 1981 as the first AVA in California. It includes about 225 wineries and grows many different grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Zinfandel. The region is also known for its microclimates, which promote the varied types of grapes.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Napa Valley AVA is located in the southern part of Napa County, surrounding the communities of Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga. The region stretches from San Pablo Bay in the south, northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. The climate of the Napa Valley AVA is Mediterranean, characterized by mild winters and dry summers.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

The Napa Valley AVA is renowned for its long growing season, typically running from March through October. The combination of maritime influence, the geological phenomena, and the microclimates make the region ideal for viticulture. The valley floor is flanked by the Mayacamas Mountain Range on the western and northern sides and the Vaca Mountains on the eastern side.

Wineries and Wines[edit | edit source]

There are many notable wineries in the Napa Valley AVA, including Robert Mondavi Winery, Opus One Winery, and Beringer Vineyards. These wineries produce a variety of wines, from robust Cabernet Sauvignon to delicate Chardonnay.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Tourism is a significant part of the wine business in Napa Valley. With hundreds of wineries to visit, there is a tasting room to suit nearly every visitor's tastes. In addition to wine tours, visitors can also enjoy gourmet dining, spa services, and luxury lodging.
