The Nasdaq Stock Market (NASDAQSymbol needed in NASDAQ template ) is an American stock exchange based in New York City. It is ranked second on the list of stock exchanges by market capitalization of shares traded, behind the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The Nasdaq is known for its high concentration of technology companies, including Apple Inc., Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet Inc.

History[edit | edit source]

The Nasdaq was founded on February 8, 1971, by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), now known as the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). It was the world's first electronic stock market, which distinguished it from traditional exchanges that used a physical trading floor.

The Nasdaq began as a quotation system without the ability to perform electronic trades. However, it quickly evolved to become the first exchange to offer online trading, which revolutionized the way stocks were bought and sold.

Structure and Operations[edit | edit source]

Nasdaq operates as a dealer's market, where market participants trade through a network of computers rather than on a physical trading floor. This electronic system allows for faster and more efficient trading.

Nasdaq is composed of three market tiers:

  • Nasdaq Global Select Market: This is the top tier, consisting of companies that meet the highest financial and liquidity standards.
  • Nasdaq Global Market: This tier includes companies that meet certain financial and liquidity criteria but are not as stringent as those in the Global Select Market.
  • Nasdaq Capital Market: This tier is for smaller companies that meet less stringent financial and liquidity criteria.

Technology and Innovation[edit | edit source]

Nasdaq is renowned for its technological innovation. It was the first exchange to offer electronic trading, and it continues to lead in the development of trading technology. Nasdaq's trading platform is used by exchanges around the world.

Nasdaq Composite Index[edit | edit source]

The Nasdaq Composite is a stock market index of the common stocks and similar securities listed on the Nasdaq stock market. It is one of the most followed indices in the world, alongside the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500. The index is heavily weighted towards technology companies.
