Technology is the sum of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation. Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, and the like, or it can be embedded in machines to allow for operation without detailed knowledge of their workings.

History of Technology[edit | edit source]

The use of tools and complex sets of practices within the social order represents the existence of human society. The history of technology traces the changes and creation of tools and techniques and is similar to human history. Technology can refer to material objects of use to humanity, such as machines, hardware or utensils, but can also encompass broader themes, including systems, methods of organization, and techniques.

Types of Technology[edit | edit source]

Technology can be categorized into several types. Some of these include:

  • Information Technology - This involves the use of computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and retrieve information.
  • Biotechnology - This technology uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use.
  • Nanotechnology - This involves manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale.
  • Cognitive Technology - This is a field of technology that studies the design and application of devices and systems that can perceive, reason, learn, and interact with the environment.

Impact of Technology[edit | edit source]

Technology has a significant impact on humans as well as on other animal species. The role and impact of technology in both our personal and working lives is ever growing. Understanding how people shape technology and how technology shapes people's interactions with each other and the natural world is important not only for those who research, develop and implement new technologies but also for all those people and organizations that have to use those technologies in their working and personal lives.
