National Academies

The National Academies are a group of private, non-profit institutions that provide expert advice on some of the most pressing challenges facing the nation and the world. These institutions help shape policies, inform public opinion, and advance the pursuit of science, engineering, and medicine.

History[edit | edit source]

The National Academies were founded by an Act of Congress, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, to meet the government's urgent need for an independent advisor on scientific matters. The National Academy of Sciences was the first to be established, followed by the National Academy of Engineering in 1964 and the National Academy of Medicine in 1970.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The National Academies consist of three honorific societies that recognize distinguished scholars in their respective fields: the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). These societies are made up of members who are elected by their peers for outstanding contributions to their fields.

Function[edit | edit source]

The National Academies perform an unparalleled public service by bringing together committees of experts in all areas of scientific and technological endeavor. These experts serve pro bono to address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public.
