National Academy of Medicine

National Academy of Medicine (NAM), formerly known as the Institute of Medicine (IOM), is an American nonprofit, non-governmental organization. The National Academy of Medicine provides national advice on issues relating to biomedical science, medicine, and health, and serves as an adviser to the nation to improve health. It aims to provide unbiased, evidence-based, and authoritative information and advice concerning health and science policy to policy-makers, professionals, leaders in every sector of society, and the public at large.

The National Academy of Medicine was established in 1970 under the name Institute of Medicine. The name was changed to the National Academy of Medicine on July 1, 2015. The National Academy of Medicine is a member of the United States National Academies, which also includes the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the National Research Council (NRC).

The National Academy of Medicine's primary function is to provide expert advice to policy makers and the public on health issues. The NAM collaborates closely with its peer academies and other divisions within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in the NAM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
