National Board of Examinations (NBE) is an autonomous body in India established in 1975 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (India). Its primary purpose is to standardize postgraduate medical education and examination in India. The NBE conducts various examinations for Indian and international medical graduates, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses (NEET-PG), NEET for Super Specialty courses (NEET-SS), the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), and the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) exams.

History

The National Board of Examinations was established with the objective of improving the quality of the medical education by establishing high and uniform standards of postgraduate examinations in modern medicine on an all-India basis. Over the years, it has evolved to become a significant institution in the field of postgraduate medical education.

Examinations Conducted

The NBE conducts several examinations which are essential for medical graduates to practice or pursue higher education in the field of medicine. These include:

• NEET-PG: A qualifying cum ranking examination prescribed as the single entrance examination for admission to various MD/MS and PG Diploma Courses.
• NEET-SS: An examination conducted for admission to Super Specialty courses.
• FMGE: A licensure examination for Indian citizens who have obtained a medical degree from a foreign country and wish to practice medicine in India.
• DNB Final Examination: For awarding the Diplomate of National Board postgraduate medical qualifications.

Accreditation

The NBE accredits hospitals and institutions throughout India to conduct postgraduate and postdoctoral programs in various medical disciplines. Accreditation is granted based on the criteria set by the NBE, which ensures that the accredited programs maintain high standards of medical education.

Objectives

The main objectives of the National Board of Examinations include:
