National Eating Disorders Association
National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) is a non-profit organization in the United States dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders. NEDA serves as a leading advocate for the prevention, treatment, and research of eating disorders, aiming to improve access to treatment, increase awareness of the impact of eating disorders on individuals and society, and promote healthy body image and self-esteem.
History[edit]
The National Eating Disorders Association was established in 2001 through the merger of two existing organizations: Eating Disorders Awareness & Prevention (EDAP) and the American Anorexia Bulimia Association (AABA). This merger aimed to create a unified national advocacy group for individuals suffering from eating disorders. Since its inception, NEDA has grown to become the largest nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated to addressing the full spectrum of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and OSFED (Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder).
Mission and Activities[edit]
NEDA's mission is to support individuals and families affected by eating disorders, and serve as a catalyst for prevention, cures, and access to quality care. To achieve this, NEDA engages in a variety of activities, including:
- Awareness and Education: NEDA raises awareness about the dangers of eating disorders and promotes healthy body image through public education campaigns, events like the National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and resources available on its website.
- Support Services: The organization offers support services to those affected by eating disorders, including a helpline, online forums, and a directory of treatment providers.
- Advocacy: NEDA advocates for policies and legislation that improve the treatment and understanding of eating disorders, both at the state and federal levels.
- Research: Supporting research into the causes, treatment, and effects of eating disorders is another key focus area for NEDA, with the aim of advancing the field and improving outcomes for sufferers.
Programs and Initiatives[edit]
NEDA runs several programs and initiatives aimed at supporting individuals affected by eating disorders and their families. These include:
- NEDA Helpline: A confidential helpline that offers support and guidance to those struggling with eating disorders and their loved ones.
- NEDA Walks: Community events that raise awareness and funds for eating disorder support and research.
- Body Acceptance Program: An initiative aimed at challenging societal beauty standards and promoting body positivity.
- Feeding Hope Fund: A grant program that supports research into innovative treatments and therapies for eating disorders.
Impact[edit]
NEDA has made significant contributions to the field of eating disorders through its advocacy, support services, and educational initiatives. The organization has helped countless individuals find the help they need to recover from eating disorders and has been instrumental in advancing public understanding of these complex conditions.
