National Marine Fisheries Service
National Marine Fisheries Service
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), also known as NOAA Fisheries, is a United States federal agency responsible for the stewardship of the nation's ocean resources and their habitat. The NMFS is a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which operates under the United States Department of Commerce.
History[edit | edit source]
The NMFS was established in 1871 as the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries, commonly known as the Fish Commission. It was later reorganized and renamed the Bureau of Fisheries in 1903. In 1970, the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries was transferred to NOAA and renamed the National Marine Fisheries Service.
Mission[edit | edit source]
The primary mission of the NMFS is to manage and conserve marine resources to ensure their long-term sustainability. This includes the management of fisheries, the protection of marine mammals, endangered species, and their habitats, as well as the enforcement of laws and regulations related to marine resources.
Key Functions[edit | edit source]
- **Fisheries Management**: NMFS is responsible for the management of the nation's marine fisheries, including the development and implementation of Fishery Management Plans (FMPs) to prevent overfishing and rebuild overfished stocks.
- **Marine Mammal Protection**: The agency enforces the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) to protect marine mammals from harassment, hunting, capture, and killing.
- **Endangered Species Conservation**: NMFS implements the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to protect and recover threatened and endangered marine species.
- **Habitat Conservation**: The agency works to protect and restore marine habitats that are essential for the survival and health of marine species.
- **Law Enforcement**: NMFS enforces federal laws and regulations related to marine resources, including the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
Research and Data Collection[edit | edit source]
NMFS conducts scientific research and collects data on marine ecosystems, fish populations, and other marine life. This research is critical for making informed management decisions and ensuring the sustainability of marine resources.
Regional Offices and Science Centers[edit | edit source]
The NMFS operates six regional offices and five science centers across the United States. These offices and centers work collaboratively to manage marine resources and conduct research specific to their regions.
