Powhatan Confederacy[edit | edit source]

The Powhatan Confederacy was a powerful alliance of several tribes in the Virginia area, led by Chief Powhatan. This confederacy included tribes such as the Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and Chickahominy. The Powhatan Confederacy was instrumental in the early interactions with English settlers, including the establishment of Jamestown in 1607.

The Pamunkey tribe is one of the most well-known tribes in Virginia. They were part of the Powhatan Confederacy and have a reservation located in King William County. The Pamunkey were recognized by the federal government in 2016.

Mattaponi Tribe[edit | edit source]

The Mattaponi tribe, also part of the Powhatan Confederacy, has a reservation along the Mattaponi River in King William County. The Mattaponi have maintained their cultural heritage and continue to live on their ancestral lands.

Chickahominy Tribe[edit | edit source]

The Chickahominy tribe is another significant tribe in Virginia. They were also part of the Powhatan Confederacy and are located in Charles City County. The Chickahominy were recognized by the federal government in 2018.
