Natural uranium

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Natural uranium is a type of uranium that is found in the Earth's crust. It is a mixture of three isotopes: U-238, U-235, and U-234. Natural uranium is used as a fuel in nuclear reactors and in the production of nuclear weapons.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Natural uranium is composed of approximately 99.3% U-238, 0.7% U-235, and a trace amount of U-234. The ratio of U-238 to U-235 is about 140 to 1. The presence of U-234 is due to the decay of U-238.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Natural uranium is used in several applications. It is primarily used as a fuel in nuclear reactors. It can also be used in the production of nuclear weapons. In addition, it is used in the manufacture of radiation shielding and in radiography.

Health effects[edit | edit source]

Exposure to natural uranium can have adverse health effects. It can cause kidney damage and increase the risk of cancer. The risk is higher for people who are exposed to high levels of uranium over a long period of time.
