Needs

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Needs are the basic requirements that an individual must have fulfilled in order to function and survive. They are the fundamental aspects of life that people need to have in order to live a healthy and fulfilling life. Needs can be physical, such as food and water, or they can be emotional, such as love and companionship. They can also be individual or collective, and they can change over time and from one context to another.

Definition[edit | edit source]

The term Need is used to refer to something that is necessary for an organism to live a healthy life. Needs are distinguished from wants in that needs indicate a lack or a deficiency that can cause a clear adverse outcome, such as physical illness or death, if not fulfilled.

Types of Needs[edit | edit source]

There are several types of needs that individuals experience. These can be broadly categorized into physical needs, emotional needs, and social needs.

Physical Needs[edit | edit source]

Physical needs are those that are required for survival and physical well-being. These include the need for food, water, shelter, and clothing. These needs are the most basic and are considered the foundation of survival.

Emotional Needs[edit | edit source]

Emotional needs are those that relate to our mental and emotional state. These include the need for love, acceptance, security, and self-esteem. These needs are often fulfilled through relationships and social interactions.

Social Needs[edit | edit source]

Social needs are those that relate to our interactions with others and our place in society. These include the need for friendship, belonging, and recognition. These needs are often fulfilled through social interactions and community involvement.

Theories of Needs[edit | edit source]

Several theories have been proposed to explain the nature of human needs and their importance in human life. Some of the most notable include Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, and McClelland's theory of needs.
