Neer
Neer is a medical term that refers to a specific type of shoulder impingement syndrome. It was named after Dr. Charles S. Neer II, an orthopedic surgeon who first described the condition in 1972. The Neer impingement sign is a physical examination maneuver used to test for shoulder impingement syndrome.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Neer impingement sign is a test that doctors use to diagnose shoulder conditions. During the test, the doctor raises the patient's arm and rotates it internally. If the maneuver causes pain, it is a positive Neer impingement sign, indicating that the patient may have shoulder impingement syndrome.
Shoulder Impingement Syndrome[edit | edit source]
Shoulder impingement syndrome is a condition where the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles become trapped and compressed during shoulder movements. This causes injury to the shoulder tendons and bursa resulting in painful movement of the shoulder.
Neer's Contribution[edit | edit source]
Dr. Charles S. Neer II, an orthopedic surgeon, first described the condition in 1972. He made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of shoulder conditions. His work has been instrumental in the development of surgical techniques for treating various shoulder conditions.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of shoulder impingement syndrome is usually made based on the patient's history and physical examination. The Neer impingement sign is one of the tests used to confirm the diagnosis. Other tests may include the Hawkins-Kennedy test and the empty can test.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for shoulder impingement syndrome may include rest, physical therapy, and medication. In some cases, surgery may be necessary. The type of treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the patient's overall health.
