Neponsit, Queens

Neponsit, Queens is a small, affluent neighborhood located in the New York City borough of Queens. It is part of Queens Community Board 14. Neponsit is situated on the western half of the Rockaway Peninsula, the southernmost area of the borough.

Neponsit was developed in 1910 as an exclusive community for the wealthy. The name "Neponsit" is believed to be derived from a Native American term meaning "the place between waters" - those waters being the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Neponsit is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Jamaica Bay to the north. It is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Belle Harbor to the east and Jacob Riis Park to the west. The neighborhood is primarily residential with no commercial businesses.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, Neponsit had a population of approximately 2,000 residents. The neighborhood is known for its high income level and low population density.

Landmarks and culture[edit | edit source]

Neponsit is home to the Neponsit Beach Hospital, which was opened in 1915 and served as a tuberculosis sanatorium. The hospital was later converted into a nursing home and was finally closed in 1998. The building was demolished in 2005.

The neighborhood is also known for its private, high-end homes and its beachfront properties. The Neponsit Property Owners' Association owns the beachfront land and leases it to the residents.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Neponsit is served by the MTA's Q22, Q35, and QM16 buses. The neighborhood does not have direct subway access, but the New York City Subway's A train is accessible in neighboring Rockaway Park.

Education[edit | edit source]

Neponsit is part of the New York City Department of Education's District 27. The neighborhood does not have any public schools within its boundaries, but residents are zoned to nearby schools in Rockaway Beach and Rockaway Park.
