Netley, also known as Netley Abbey, is a village located in the Borough of Eastleigh in Hampshire, England. It is situated on the eastern shore of Southampton Water, and is known for its historical significance and picturesque surroundings.

History[edit | edit source]

Netley has a rich history that dates back to the medieval period. The village is most famous for the ruins of Netley Abbey, a 13th-century Cistercian monastery. The abbey was founded in 1239 by Peter des Roches, the Bishop of Winchester, and became one of the wealthiest abbeys in England. It was dissolved in 1536 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII.

In the 19th century, Netley became notable for the construction of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital, which was built between 1856 and 1863. The hospital was the largest military hospital in the world at the time and played a significant role during the Crimean War and both World Wars. Although the main building was demolished in 1966, the hospital's chapel, known as the Royal Victoria Chapel, still stands and is a prominent landmark.
