New Universe

The New Universe is a comic book imprint from Marvel Comics that was published from 1986 to 1989. It was created as part of Marvel's 25th anniversary celebration and was intended to be a more realistic and grounded universe compared to the main Marvel Universe. The New Universe was the brainchild of then-editor-in-chief Jim Shooter.

History[edit | edit source]

The New Universe was launched in 1986 with eight new titles: Star Brand, Spitfire and the Troubleshooters, Justice, Nightmask, Psi-Force, Kickers, Inc., Mark Hazzard: Merc, and DP7. These titles were set in a world much like our own, with no superheroes or supervillains until a mysterious event called the "White Event" granted various individuals superhuman abilities.

Titles[edit | edit source]

  • Star Brand: The story of Ken Connell, who gains a powerful energy source known as the Star Brand.
  • Spitfire and the Troubleshooters: Follows Jenny Swensen and her team of high-tech troubleshooters.
  • Justice: Chronicles the adventures of Tensen, an alien law enforcer.
  • Nightmask: Centers on Keith Remsen, who can enter people's dreams.
  • Psi-Force: A group of teenagers with psychic powers.
  • Kickers, Inc.: A team of former football players who use their abilities to help others.
  • Mark Hazzard: Merc: Follows the life of a mercenary named Mark Hazzard.
  • DP7: Stands for "Displaced Paranormals," a group of people dealing with their newfound powers.

White Event[edit | edit source]

The "White Event" was a mysterious astronomical phenomenon that occurred in the New Universe, granting various individuals superhuman abilities. This event was a central plot point in many of the New Universe titles and served as the catalyst for the emergence of superpowered beings in this otherwise normal world.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite its initial hype, the New Universe struggled with sales and was eventually canceled in 1989. However, it has since gained a cult following and has been referenced in various Marvel Comics storylines. The concept of a more realistic and grounded universe has influenced other comic book imprints and series.
