Newton Food Centre was first opened in 1971 as a hawker centre. It was later renovated and reopened in 2006, with a larger seating capacity and improved facilities. The centre is named after Howard Newton, a British civil servant who was the Secretary for Chinese Affairs in Singapore during the 1930s.
